MERRILLVILLE, Ind. – A mother has been trapped after her two young children were found alone and shivering in a cold apartment in Merrillville, Indiana, on Monday afternoon.
The children, ages 5 and 6, were discovered by a maintenance worker entering the apartment at 1240 W. 52nd Drive to fix the heat, according to the Lake County (Ind.) Sheriff’s Office.
The children wore coats but were still shivering in the cold apartment, officials said. The police found that the children had been left there with no functioning heating from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to officials, the only food they ate was ice cream and Pepsi.

The children’s 44-year-old mother had apparently gone to work at a grocery store nearby, officials said. She was taken into custody pending criminal charges for neglect of a dependent.
The children have now been placed with other relatives.
The Indiana Department of Child Services is investigating.
