What images come to mind when you think of kindergarten? Do they include snacks, naps, coloring books, outdoor games, and stories? Do you consider it an important educational landmark or free for toddlers?

If you belong to the majority class, maybe in early childhood education not given the importance it deserves. One reason could be that you may have grown up in a time when kindergarten served several needs that are now destined for kindergarten.

Kindergarten has been transformed in recent decades. Puppet shows, dramatic play centers and costumes have given way to systematic learning, testing and educational work. Today, preschoolers are expected to do a lot more than you probably did in your day.

This change in elementary school has made early childhood education very critical to academic success. This is because preschool is a place where children learn to study and function in a school environment. It is a place where toddlers begin to build their attitude towards school teachersin addition to practicing social skills.

For toddlers, ‘play’ is an intrinsic part of their learning process. This is how they process new information and try to decipher where their place is in this big world. This means that children dressed in costumes and running around not only enjoy the revelry, but also learn creativity, consider career paths, work on body awareness and self-awareness, and do much more.

Children of color

Toddlers from minority homes have several disadvantages from the start. Their homes may not have English as their native language. These children could also not have access to books and other study materials. In addition, their parents education levels can be lower and they can work long hours. Since preschool attendance is linked to parents’ educational attainment, children of parents with higher educational attainment are more likely to participate in an early childhood program.

Latino and black children are nearly a year behind their white peers in reading and math. Consequently, they are at a significant disadvantage in the transition to kindergarten. This gap causes lifelong discrepancies.

Research shows that prioritizing early childhood education produces long-lasting intergenerational effects on minority communities, helping to address social inequalities by giving children of color a significant advantage.

Be socially mobile

Social mobility is crucial for minority children to have opportunities to transform their communities and usher in real cultural change. However, America stereotypes black children as troublemakers, which negatively affects them education. In kindergarten or even beyond, black boys are much more likely to be punished.

A recent report says black children make up nearly 20% of preschoolers, but almost 50% of all extracurricular suspensions. Similar differences exist between age groups. Another study revealed that black male children are more likely to be punished more severely because they are believed to be much older than they actually are.

Conclusion

To help children of color gain upward social mobility and find equality in our culture, we must ensure that they have access to education at all levels. However, a kindergarten could be the most important educational institution for these children because of its fundamental nature.
