A fire at a Staten Island home tragically killed two children and injured four on Friday morning.
At 10:18 a.m. on December 23, FDNY personnel responded to a fire at 1048 Van Duzer Street. Firefighters arrived on the scene to report that children were trapped on the second floor of the home.
The fire brigade came into action to extinguish the fire and save the children. Two young children died of their injuries in the fire.
“We can definitely say today that our hearts are broken. The heart of the city is broken today. This is truly an unspeakable tragedy for that family, for the neighborhood, for the local community and for our entire city,” said FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
Of the injured children, two are in critical condition, while two teenagers suffered minor injuries. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries.
“We all feel the loss of these two young children who had a bright future ahead of us, and we mourn them as a city. New York City is a family, the fire department is a family, and we take care of each other. We will take care of this family like a city,” Kavanaugh said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the FDNY Fire Marshal’s office.
