New updates are added at the bottom of this story…….
The original story (published December 15, 2022) follows:
Plex is one of the most popular streaming services and a client-server media player platform. The service helps organize media from personal collections and online services.
Using its server app, one can also stream content to a variety of devices. It also allows users to stream content from its catalog of 200 live channels.
However, like any other media streaming platform, Plex also suffers from occasional bugs and glitches that hamper the end-user experience.
Plex for Apple TV stutters during 4K HDR playback
According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8), several users are experiencing severe stutter when playing back 4K HDR remuxes.
Majority of viewers are facing severe frame rate drops and random dropout and audio sync issues when playing 4K content on the app.
The Plex app for Apple TV has received the v8.12 update a few weeks ago.
Although the patch aimed to fix some previous issues and add to the feature set of the app, it ended up introducing more issues, spoiling the user’s playback experience.

I eventually upgraded to an Apple TV that I wired into a Google Fiber connection that can play 4K content without any pauses or buffering. The problem I have though is that every ten seconds or so I will get a single jerky frame.

When watching 4K HDR remuxes with 8.12, it seems like a single dropped frame occurs about every minute. Depending on what action is on screen when this dropped frame occurs, it may or may not be noticed, but it’s there. While watching a full movie, someone will notice this repeatedly.

Some have even complained that when consuming content, the sound would play for about 10 seconds and then stop completely.
The app recently received the v8.13 update Fixed some of the old issues with crashing when browsing sources and incorrect thumbnails.
However, it should be noted that 4K HDR playback issues on Plex for Apple TV remain unresolved.
Still no solution for UHD HDR remux playback. Dropped frames, audio sync and dropouts.

Thankfully, Plex has acknowledged the issue and assured its users that they are work to fix it.

While the company says it is working on fixing bugs, no ETA has been shared at this time.
Potential Workaround
We’ve found a potential workaround that might help resolve the issue for some. One could get rid of the problem by trying to revert to the old video player from the settings.

But it should be Noted that reverting to the old player will nullify the readability of Dolby Vision content, and some may still experience a slight stutter.
Update 1 (December 28, 2022)
2:32 p.m. (IST): Another potential workaround is to enable dynamic range and frame rate matching on your Apple TV. Follow these steps to do so:
1. Go to Settings
2. Then Video and Audio
3. Match the content, then enable the matching dynamic range and frame rate adjustment.

That said, we’ll be keeping an eye out for the issue of Apple TV users stuttering during 4K HDR playback on the Plex app and updating this story as we come across new information.
