Peoria Unified MET Academy students make ornaments for children in foster care

Peoria United School Districts WITH Professional Academy students recently made 280 Christmas ornaments for Arizona Sunshine Angels, a nonprofit that supports foster children living in group homes in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

MET Professional Academy students spent hours during class and after school on early release days designing and engraving the ornaments for children in foster homes. Included with the ornaments, which are inscribed with their names and a holiday-themed image, are written cards from the students and toiletries to donate to the group homes.

The students wanted to give back during this holiday season and thought that this gesture would give the children a small coin that they can keep with them no matter where they stay.

Liberty High School and MET Professional Academy Senior, Hunter Cordova, who led this effort, says the project is a great way to give back to the community using the tools he learned to use in the MET Professional Academy program.

“I thought this could be really meaningful and impactful for the kids,” Hunter shared. “Knowing that they may not get many gifts this year, a piece of jewelry with their name and a letter can mean a lot to them.”

The MET Professional Academy is a signature STEM program in the Peoria Unified School District for sophomores, juniors, and seniors attending one of the district’s seven high schools. MET students spend part of the day at their home school and the other part at the MET Professional Academy. At the MET, students are immersed in a professional environment and gain valuable experience working with industry professionals who help them learn through authentic projects and work experiences.
