A Cohasset man has been detained after attempting to break into the city’s police headquarters with a chainsaw, then barricaded himself inside his home with two small children, authorities said.

Cohasset police said officers rushed to the front of the department’s headquarters on Sunday afternoon because a man, later identified as Brien Buckley, 35, was “chopping at the security door” with a chainsaw. He drove home when police arrived, locked himself inside and dangled some young children from a second-story window, police said, sparking an hours-long standoff with negotiators.

Hours later, police said they stormed the house, bagged and arrested Buckley. He is expected to appear in Quincy District Court Monday on a dozen charges.
