How to lock your Apple Watch
Keep your laptop safe. Apple Watch users are prompted to create a password during device setup. It can be any four to ten digit number and it doesn’t have to be the same password as your iPhone.
Auto-lock settings
Your Apple Watch automatically locks when you’re not wearing it. You can adjust this default setting by changing your wrist detection preferences.
- On your Apple Watch, open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap password.
- Press the green button next to Wrist detection. You will be prompted to enter your password.
- Read the information about disabling this feature, then tap Switch off confirm.
Once you disable wrist detection, the watch will no longer lock or unlock automatically. It will also disable additional features such as heart rate tracking and notifications. The watch will also not automatically issue an emergency call if a fall is detected.

You can also configure the portable device to unlock automatically when you unlock your paired phone. The iPhone just needs to be within Bluetooth range of your Apple Watch. While you can disable this feature from the wrist, you can only enable it from the Watch app on your iPhone.
- On your paired iPhone, open the Watch app and press My watch.
- Scroll down and tap password. If your watch is locked, you will be prompted to unlock it.
- Tap the toggle next to Unlock with iPhone. You may be prompted to enter your Apple Watch passcode again.

If you want to change your Apple Watch passcode, you need to know your current passcode to do so.
- On your Apple Watch, open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap password.
