  • Parents go viral by dressing up as the grinch and scaring their kids.
  • Some videos have already been viewed tens of millions of times.
  • “And that’s why therapists will always have jobs,” joked one commenter.

Parents fool their kids into dressing up as the Grinch and stealing their presents, and there’s an entire TikTok subgenre of Grinch-themed videos called “#grinchtok,” which has a total of 257 million views.

One of the most popular videos has been viewed more than 37 million times and shows an adult in a green Grinch outfit walking into a room and starting waving a finger at two kids on a couch. The kids start wobbling, yelling at the person and throwing pillows at them, and one kid tries to subdue the Grinch with a punch. The costumed finally manages to get their presents out from under the Christmas tree as the kids sob.

In another viral video, a person wearing a Grinch outfit dances into a room and sends two kids crying and running in the opposite direction. The clip has more than 14 million views and 2.5 million likes.

The YouTuber and TikToker blesiv, whose content revolves around vlogging-style challenges and videos, also uploaded a clip to TikTok showing him pranking his little brother with a Grinch outfit.

“These are my gifts now,” snaps the creator at one point as he put gifts in a sack while his brother could be heard sobbing.

At the end of the video, the boy tries to give the Grinch a hug, but the Grinch starts running after his little brother, scaring the kid. Reaction to the video has been mostly positive, but there was also a contingent of users who wondered why he leaned so hard into the act.

There was a similarly mixed reaction to a video uploaded by a family showing a person in Grinch costume grabbing a boat full of gifts from a child and sprinting out of the house. The camera operator could be heard laughing as a child screamed in terror.

“We like to scare the kids for fun in this family,” reads the video description, which has been viewed more than 400,000 times.

“And that’s why therapists will always have jobs,” said one top comment.
