Not all gifts are perfect. Whether it’s something that was a little different than you expected, it doesn’t work the way you imagined (or not at all) or it’s something you already have, there’s no no need to stress. Retailers know these things are going to happen during the busy holiday season and make exceptions through holiday return policies.

If you want a refund or prefer store credit, you must meet the specified time frame that each retailer has established. Since many of these return policies expire in January, you’ll likely need to act quickly.
From Amazon and Walmart to Best Buy and Target, we’ve rounded up some major retailers’ holiday guidelines for returning unwanted and defective merchandise. We will continue to update this list as we come across additional listings. Date of purchase: Oct. 11 to Dec. 25
End of return policy: Jan. 31

End of return policy: Jan. 8

More information: This policy States Items sold and shipped by Wal-Mart may be returned or replaced by mail within 90 days of receipt. If an item you received from Walmart is damaged or defective, you may return it by mail or replacement or to any Walmart store for a refund.
Date of purchase: From Nov. 1 until 180 days after purchase (depending on item)
End of return policyMost items eligible for return under the 180 day policy can be returned with or without a receipt. High-end electronics, watches and beauty are the exception during the holiday season. Electronic items and watches purchased after Nov. 1 can be returned by Jan. 31 And it must come in its original packaging (for electronics and watches), while beauty products must be new or lightly used. More information: Kohl’s may be able to help you find your original purchase to process a refund. If Kohl’s can’t find it, you can always return the items as a return without a receipt.

Returns made using a gift receipt must follow Staples’ return policy and are limited to store credit only. The receipt barcode must be intact and readable to process a return.
