featured image

Last year, tech geeks were drooling over the latest series of Samsung and Apple phones, with Samsung winning the prize with its innovative Fold and Flip feature. This year, both companies released their flagship models – Samsung Galaxy S22 and iPhone 14.

Both tech companies produce high-end smartphones and compete aggressively every year for the best features, camera technologies, and designs. This year, however, both companies produced excellent phones in similar price ranges, but faced chip shortages and factory production shutdowns due to lockdowns in China. A closer look and preview of the two smartphones will determine which one fared better this year in terms of features, design, camera technology, and software.

Design and display

The iPhone 14 series retains the narrow notch design similar to the iPhone 13, while adopting the traditional iPhone look. The latest iPhone packs the same 6.1-inch display as the Samsung Galaxy S22, making them the same size. The iPhone is available in a range of colors, Midnight, Starlight, Product Red, Blue and Purple; While the S22 came out in Cream, Purple, Sky Blue and Graphite.

The OLED panel inside the iPhone is carried over from the previous year’s series, a 6.1-inch 60Hz display, as well as 1,200 nits brightness specs. The Galaxy S22 has a darker display, but the difference is quite obvious when used in sunlight. The smartphone also has twice the refresh rate and a 120Hz display, which makes the iPhone 14 quite dwarfed by the Samsung. Additionally, the S22 has better color gamut coverage than the iPhone 14.

Performance

The iPhone 14 consists of the same A15 Bionic chipset that was placed in the iPhone 13, which has improved and faster performance, even better than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the Galaxy S22. Additionally, the iPhone 14 got a 50% boost over its predecessor with 6GB of RAM on board, while the S22 has 8GB.

The iPhone 14 runs on Ios16 while the Samsung device runs Android 12 with OneUI 4.1.

Camera

One of the most anticipated and sought after features, the camera, on both smartphones is fantastic, although Samsung is best known for satisfying photography enthusiasts with its exclusive and innovative lens and features. The S22 comes with a triple camera which includes a 50 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra wide snapper and a 10 MP 3.0x zoom lens. The upgraded iPhone consists of a 12MP main sensor and a better 12MP ultra-wide camera, while the front camera features a 12MP sensor with autofocus and OIS.

Despite great features, comparisons of images captured from the two phones showed very slight differences and favored Apple’s image results more than Samsung’s. Images from iPhone 14 were softer with more detail, while images from Samsung were slightly warm, turning them yellow. This year, the Apple iPhone 14 has better white balance and color credibility than its predecessors. Night shots were sharper and more vibrant on the S22, with better shadow exposure than on the iPhone. The front camera of the iPhone wins with better color fidelity, detail and better exposure.

The Samsung S22’s mode of action may be second to none, but the video results produce overly sharp detail, much of which is lost during recording. Apple’s video recordings are smoother, with no skipped frames and supreme image stabilization, but have a bit of dark exposure.

Battery life

The iPhone 14 has an improved battery compared to the old iPhone 13 with a 3279 mAh battery, which only lasts an hour longer in video streaming mode. Samsung, although with a better 3700 mAh battery, requires more power to run its software, Android and Snapdragon. In conclusion, in the tests conducted, the iPhone 14 lasted longer on a single battery charge than the Galaxy S22.

Both smartphones come without a charger in the retail box and have retained the previous series 27W and 25W charging ports.

The winner

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first phone to include an integrated S Pen that uses an ‘AI-based coordination prediction system’, and may have been unfairly taken advantage of this year as Apple faced strikes , protests and even blockages at its manufacturing factories in China, which has significantly affected its supply chain and delayed deliveries even during the holidays and sales season in the United States. Samsung, on the other hand, offered deep discounts and trade-in deals on almost all of its products, compared to Black Friday sales.

The company has come under fire for its software on the S22, as users have been hit with incessant ads in local Samsung apps, including the weather app and Samsung Health. In an update, the company has fixed the issue to relieve annoyed users.

Each device has its own unique features, which complement each other, covering where the other falls short. The iPhone 14 has many similar looks and features that have not changed or changed slightly from its previous series, but it still stands out pretty well as a great phone, especially with its latest working Emergency SOS feature. without cellular network. The Samsung S22 is quite the smartphone of 2022 with longer battery life, smoother video and faster chipset which translates into better performance which is great for gaming.
