Somewhere buried deep in the idea for Terrace overlooking the lake was a thought-provoking exploration of social and societal subcultures, one ripe to be turned on its head to subvert the notion of everyday prejudice. Instead, director Neil LaBute opted to take things to full B level, but your mileage may vary depending on whether that was the right decision or not.
To be fair, a $20 million genre film that gives Samuel L. Jackson ample opportunity to chew on as many landscapes as humanly possible is justification enough to plunge headlong into borderline-absurdist potboiler territory, but respective Rotten Tomatoes scores of 44 and 39 percent from critics and crowds paint a rather disappointing picture.
Terrace overlooking the lake however, made its budget back almost two and a half times over at the box office, promising to see Jackson cheat on his new neighbors, which proved more than enough to entice Netflix subscribers to give it a go. According to FlixPatrol, the elevated urban fantasy has become one of the platform’s most-watched titles this weekend, with its plenty of goon appeal proving irresistible to viewers at home.
Jackson’s seasoned and deeply racist cop doesn’t fare well against interracial newlyweds Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington who are setting up a house in his neighborhood. From there, the figurative d*ck measurement reaches ever crazier heights, before the shackles really come loose in an all-guns-blazing final act.
